Super Powereds: Year 1 by Drew HayesMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book was absolutely hilarious!
****Spoilers Ahead!****
So this is your typical book aimed at young adults involving super heroes. What sets this one apart from the gross competition of books in a similar vein is that this book creates three separate tiers of gifted beings. At the top of the stack are the heroes of a type that we are perhaps most familiar with. These people are gifted, well trained, and are authorized by the government to help people wherever and whenever they can. These people are known as 'Heroes'.
The second group ranked right below them is a group of people known as 'Supers'. These are basically the vast majority of people who have powers but do not have a licence or the training to be considered a Hero.
Lastly, there are the 'Powereds'. These people are like Supers in that they have powers, yet unlike them they are unable to control their powers. One of the best examples of this is a character who has the ability to teleport, but not only does he not have any control of where he teleports too, he can only do it when he sneezes.
Now, while that is all well and good, what really makes this book interesting is that the five main characters are all Powereds, who are the guinea pigs for a new surgical procedure that turns them into Supers, and then undergo the training to become Hereos. As it turns out, this training comes in the form of a college degree, and that means that there will be (at least) four books, one for each year of the students collegiate careers. This is their freshman year, and I must say, by the end of the book there wasn't even a question about buying the second one.
I highly recommend this book without reservation to anyone who is interested in some really good laughs.
